Valdez is nicknamed Little Switzerland. Average snowfall in Valdez from October to May is 303 inches, or about 25 feet. New snowfall records were set in January 1990, with snowfall for one day at 47 1/2". Record monthly snowfall is 180 inches in February 1996.

Eagle Pair.
We saw lots of Eagles while we were there. After everyone cleans their fish the eagles and seagulls come down to the banks to get what is left of the fish.



 

Valdez has long been known for its beautiful setting, with the Chugach Mountains rising behind the city, and the small boat harbor in front.

 

LuLu Belle is the best tour vessel in Valdez. Captain Rodolf gives the best tour. He takes you right up close to the Columbia Glacier.

 

The end of the pipe line at Valdez. National attention was focused on Valdez and the pipline when the oil tanker Exxon Valdez ran aground in March 1989, causing an 11 million gallon oil spill. Valdez's economy depends on the oil industry, the Prince William Sound fishery and tourism.
