By using this tutorial you agree to my terms

For this tutorial you will need Jasc PSP 8 .

PSP 8 users You will need the canvas here.

Included in the zip is the brush you use for the scales. Put it in the PSP 8 brush folder that is in the My PSP8 folder in My Documents folder. To load it you go to File/Import/Custom Brush. Click on Open then find the folder then click on the sm-fishscale.jbr  then click add.

This is the air brush settings I use.

This is the smudge settings I use.

     1. Load alpha channel bottom fin 1. Flood fill with color 2 on chart. Add new layer and airbrush size 2 to 5 shading as in screen shot. I used the 1st, 3rd and 6th and 7th colors, add new layer for each color. Smudge or soften the colors to blend.

     2. Load alpha channel top fin 1 flood fill with color 2. Draw in lines with color 1 as in screen shot. Smudge to blend. Add new layer and brush around edges with same color. Change to 6th color and add some color to top and left inside edges. Add new layer for white high lights and black speckles. Apply motion blur angel 38.00, strength 14.00.

     3. Load alpha channel top fin 2, flood fill with color 13. Add new layer change foreground color to 11 and background color to 10. Airbrush around edges with foreground color. Add new layer change size to 3 and paint colors 11 and 10 as in screen shot. Smudge to blend shading. Add new layer and change color to white and paint between the lines and top edge for highlights.

TIP: to get the lines straight click once then hold down on shift key and move mouse to where you want line to end then click again. Keep holding down the shift key and move the curser back to first click to make line darker. If you get your lines too dark you can always lower the opacity.

Do the same for the last 2 fins. For the tail fin put the high lights on the top and bottom edge close to the body. For the bottom fin put the  high lights on the bottom left edge.

     4. Load alpha channel body, flood fill with color 12. Add new layer naming it scales. Click on the airbrush and find your sm-fishescale2 brush. Use the settings below. Start a few rows in front of fins and make the scales using color 11. Add new layer change color to black and size to 45. Make a few rows like in second screen shot, gaussian blur 2 to 4. You can add new layer and air brush some of the dark blue under these dark scales.  Add new layer change back to color 11 and size to 30. Make a few more rows then change the size to 25 and go all the way to end of tail. Click on body layer and then add new layer. Use color 10 to add shading and some white high lights like in last screen shot.

     5. Load alpha channel eye, flood fill with color 13. Apply cut out, vertical and horizontal 0, opacity 100, blur 13, color #AD4B03. Add new layer use air brush and paint eye as in first screen shot with colors 7 and 8 then center color is last color on chart.

     6. Click on layer below eye then add new layer. Now you will be adding layers of colors for his head. Start with the light yellow and then the greens. The dark green goes on top and a little heaver on the bottom. Smudge each layer as you go. For the mouth use the darkest blue and some around the eye and some orange at the eye too. If you get too much just lower the opacity. Add some white high lights.

     7. Add new layer. Use color 9  and air brush size 13, hardness 36, density 68 and opacity 65. Brush on some dots as in screen shot.

That's all there is to the fish. If you find the your scales aren't visible any more just click on there layers and adjust brightness. I had to set mine at -50. By the time I got done with the yellows and greens you couldn't see any scales. LOL

Hope everyone had fun with this.
