We are going to use preset shape ellipse to make the buds. Set background to first light pink color and set foreground to nil. Add new vector layer then move it down till it is under the stems layer. I added a raster layer and flood filled with black to see better, this is optional. Draw out a bud as in screen shot. Make two more for that part of the stem. The next one you will need to do a little editing to the nodes. You will need to add two nodes more nodes.
Drag out the shape to be longer than the others. Click on pen tool. To add a node put curser on line and hold down the Ctrl button when you see the add as in screen shot below click left mouse button. Now you have added a node. Do the same to the other side.

Now right click on one of the new nodes then select cusp and turn top arrow out as in screen shot above. Do the same to the other side.
Now go on to the rest of the buds. This is what I have so far.

Convert all your buds to raster layers. In the layer palette click the lock to lock the transparency. Set the foreground color to the 5th color on chart and background to the 6th color. I started with the buds on the left hand side. Spray the left side with the 6th color and the right side of the bud with the 5th color as in screen shot. Use the 3rd and 4th colors in the middle areas. Us white in the center for high light. The bigger the bud the more color you add. Smudge using the same settings as the leaves.

Paint each one just a little different. Here is what I have below.

Now we are ready to do the flowers.
