I use the hairy brushes for smudging you can get them  here if you don't already have them.  I have had them for ages and never really used them much. Then I started doing the new tutorials at Sue's new group. Artistic Distinction  I have learned a lot about shading there.

This is the air brush settings I use.

This is the smudge settings I use.

We will start at the bottom of the canvas. On each step we will load alpha channel

     1. Load alpha channel stem 1 flood fill with 3rd color on chart. Click on the lock in the layer pallet. Set foreground color to 1st color and background to 11th color on chart. Air brush a few spots on the right side of stem with color 11. Then left side on the curves with the 1st color. You just want a little bit of color there for shading. Use the smudge to blend. You don't have to be too fussy about adding the color just a hit and miss will work. Apply cut out with these settings, horizontal and vertical 0, opacity 100, blur 8, color #3C3A10. Do the same for the rest of the stem layers.

     2. Load alpha channel leaf 1 flood fill with 3rd color on chart. Add new layer, air brush using color 1 as in screen shot. Smudge from center out. Use color 11  on bottom edges as in second screen shot. Smudge from bottom going up. If you get it too dark just lower opacity. Change foreground color to 2nd on chart and change size of air brush to about 4. Paint down center of both leafs as in screen shot then smudge.  Add new layer and use color 1 to paint in some detail then smudge. Add new layer each time you change the color.

     3. Load alpha channel leaf 2 flood fill with 3rd color on chart. Add new layer. Do basically the same as you did for the first leaf.  The neat thing about PSP 8 is you can change the rotation of the brush on the smudge to the direction you are moving the brush. I change the rotation all the time to get the curve to go a certain direction. Color 1 around the edges darker spray at the bottom. Color 11 on top left and bottom right edges. Color 2 for the high light on the ridge.

     4. Load alpha channel leaf 3. Use the same colors as you did in the other leaves.

     5. Load alpha channel leaf 4. Flood fill with color 3. Add new layer use color 1 as in screen shot. Smudge. Add new layer use color 2 as in screen shot, smudge. Add new layer use color  1  size 3 to paint some detail. On bottom part of leaf use color # F2EEBE. You leaves should be something like last screen shot.

     6. We are going to skip over the bud and flower layers. Just finish up with our green colors. They are all very small ones so they should go pretty fast.

     7. Load alpha channel bud leaf 1. Flood fill with color 4. Click on the lock in the layer pallet. Air brush the tips with color 1, smudge from tips to center. Most of the first 2 bud leaves wont be seen so just the tips need shading.  Do the same for bud leaf 2. Use color on the bud leaf 2 bottom edges.

     8. Load alpha channel bud leaf 3. Flood fill with color 3 lock the layer. Airbrush around edges as in screen shots with color 1 and in middle with color 2. Do the same for bud leaf 4. Use color # F2EEBE for the lighter high lite.

Do the same for the rest of the bud and flower leaves.

     9. Load alpha channel bud, flood fill with color 7. Lock the layer pallet. Set the foreground color 9 and the background color 13. Air brush top part with color 13 and bottom tip with color 9. Smudge back to front. Change to color 5 and very lightly go around edges then smudge. Do the same for the other bud layer.

     10. Load half flower alpha channel, flood fill with 5. Lock the layer pallet. Set the foreground color 7 and background color 9. Air brush around edges with 9 and inner part with 7 as in screen shot. Smudge pulling colors down towards leaves. Change to the 5th and 6th colors and change size of air brush to about 2 or 3. Air brush as in last screen shot then smudge going towards leaves.

     11. Load half flower 2 alpha channel. Flood fill with color 7. Keep selected and add new layer. Change colors to 9 and 10, spray darkest color on out side. Smudge towards leaves. Add new layer change colors to 5 and 13. Air brush as in screen shot. Smudge towards leaves. You can add new layer to add more color or any touch ups you need.

     12. Load right petal 1, flood fill with color 5. Keep selected and add new layer. Change foreground color to color 6 and background to color 7. Air brush with color 6 as in first screen shot. Smudge going from bottom to top. Add new layer brush some background color as in second screen shot. Smudge going from bottom to top. Do the same for petal 2. For the light color 7 air brush around left edge and top to.

     13. Load right petal 3, flood fill with color 7. Add new layer and brush around  bottom edges with color 9. Smudge from bottom towards center. Add new layer change to color 10 and spray bottom edges then smudge from center to edge. Add new layer, change color to 6 brush color as in  2nd screen shot. Use smudge and change size to about 30 and smudge from center to almost touching first color.  Add new layer and change to color 12. Air brush a little heavy like in screen shot. Smudge from top to over lap the dark purple color.

     14. Load petal 4 flood fill with color 7 deselect.  Do the same for petal 5. We are not going to work on them now. We just need them to see where the center goes.

     15. Add new layer, change colors to 9 and 11. Spray as in screen shot with color 9, change size of brush to 4 and out line center with color 11. Tap a few time with the soften brush. Change background  color # 704008 change size of air brush to about 12 and tap once or twice in the center. Change foreground color to color 11.  We are going to add some dark shading to the yellow areas as in screen shot. I used size 2 and 3 on the brush. Smudge a little dragging from center out. Add new layer we are going to do the same on the purple areas and edges using color 7 and 8.

     16. Click on petal 4 layer, load the alpha channel. Add new layer and brush around  bottom edges with color 9. Smudge from bottom towards center. Add new layer change to color 10 and spray bottom edges then smudge from center to edge. Add new layer Set foreground color to 6 and background to 5. Spray the light color as in screen shot. I spray on the light side and add more as I go.  Smudge from inside out.  Add new layer and spray on darker color. Add layers and colors till you get some thing that you like. Add new layer and switch to color 7 and the last one to add your highlights.

      17. Do the same for petal 5. Do the same for the left petal flowers.
