By using this tutorial you agree to my terms

Feel free to use your own colors for this.

For this tutorial you will need Jasc PSP 10 . This was written using 10 but it can be done in 8,9 or 7 with a few adjustments.

Below is the smudge settings I used.

Air brush settings.

" I like to do my shading all on one layer. In the layer palette click the lock  to lock the transparency.

We will be using the basic preset shapes for Santa's Express. I used gradients from Nanson's

Engine: Open transparent canvas 765x650. I used #008000 but feel free to use your own color .Use rectangle preset shape.  Put cursor on 250y 310, drag to the right to 640y 525. Click on top right node and change to asymmetric so it will curve a little, do the same for the bottom one.  Select All then click on the selection tool and click on the canvas, then save to alpha channel. After each shape you will add new vector layer but I wont tell you every time, just make sure you do.

Move cursor to 95y 295 drag to the right to 410y 525. Hold down CTRL key grab right bottom corner of shape and move in to 350. That moves both bottom corners in at the same time.

Change background color to #800000. Click on first layer. Make a small rectangle stripe it will hang over the end of the round area but that is ok for now. . Change color to #008000 and make another stripe. Change to #ECD100 and make another stripe. Duplicate 2 times to make 3 yellow stripes. Load the alpha channel you saved and then invert, click on one of the stripes then hit delete or cut. Click on each on to get the round end shape on the stripes.

Change to the hexagon preset shape, make a couple hexagons in red then change to yellow and make one small one in center.

Click back on the second layer and duplicate it. Lock the layer then flood fill with the red. Resize it 75%, center it on layer.

Change color to black. make a small rectangle in front of first rectangle for head light. Make another one smaller than the first one. Make another one on top for the smoke stack. Change to the pen tool and use foreground color black, set background to nil. I used the solid round ends line style. Below is what I have so far.

Cabin supports: Use the pen tool size 10. Background color set to nil, foreground color #000080. On right side of cabin, set curser at 360-100, click once, move cursor to 360-320 click once. convert to raster layer. Duplicate layer and move over to the left side.

Top: I used the mqc-Ribbon gradient that I got from Nanson's gradients, angle 0, repeats 0, linear. Drag out a rectangle 80-63 to 432-139. Put cursor on 432 and hold down the CTRL key and move in to 390. Change the node type to Asymmetric. convert to raster layer.

Top 2: I use the JER-Stripes gradient. You can get it here. She has a real nice tutorial for candy canes to. Set foreground to nil and background the gradient angle 147, repeats 3, linear. Drag out a rectangle.

Wheels:  Use the circle preset shape. Hold down the shift key and use the right click button and drag out a circle the size you want. The rear wheel is bigger than the 2 front ones. I use the mqc-Ribbon gradient. Lock the layer transparency then Effects/distortion effects/twirl 720 degrees.

Use the rectangle to make a small rectangle at the bottom of the back of the engine to connect the train parts. Use the pen tool size 10 color black connect segments checked, to connect the wheels. I used a gold gradient repeats 2 rectangle to make some trim on the smoke stack and light.

Below is how mine turned out.

I use the inner bevel settings below for the smoke stack and light. I changed the angle on some parts and had to apply 2 times.

Lock your layers and apply cutout vertical and horizontal 0, opacity 100, blur 6 color darkest on the each one.

I did a drop shadow too. opacity 75, blur 12, vertical and horizontal 0.

That's all there is to it. Now continue on and make the rest of the train. Add as many cars as you like.
